Palestine's Support for Indonesian Independence

Palestine's Support for Indonesian Independence - For Indonesian people, Palestine is not just a state, but it is part of the big family of the Indonesian state. His services in supporting Indonesia's independence were enormous. Thanks to this support, Indonesia is getting stronger in overcoming problems that arose before and after independence.

In general, many Indonesians think that Palestine is the first country to recognize Indonesia's independence. However, there are also some who say that it is not Palestine, but Egypt and the Arab League. Of course, this must be straightened out first so that there are no misunderstandings.

The public's assumption that Palestine was the first country to recognize Indonesia's independence stems from a congratulation by a Grand Mufti of Jerusalem named Sheikh Muhammad Amin Al-Husseini. The statement came because he heard that Uniaki Koiso (Prime Minister of Japan) promised to give independence to Indonesia in the near future.

Hearing this, Sheikh Muhammad Amin Al-Husseini, who was in Berlin at the time, immediately congratulated Indonesia via German Radio in Arabic for two consecutive days in 1944. This incident triggered the assumption that Palestine was the first country to recognize Indonesia's independence.

However, this assumption was not correct, because the congratulations from Sheikh Muhammad Amin Al-Husseini at that time were not a legal recognition of Indonesia's independence and sovereignty. But only a form of support for Indonesia. In addition, in 1944 Indonesia had not proclaimed its independence.

If it is said that the first people to congratulate and support Indonesia for its independence were Palestinians, it would probably be more accurate. This is because Palestine had not previously met the requirements to become a legally independent state (de Jure). So, any form of support from Palestine cannot be considered valid by the International.

In contrast to Egypt, which first became an independent and sovereign state under international law. Any form of support from Egypt to Indonesia will be considered valid in the eyes of the international community. In addition, support from Egypt emerged when Indonesia was already independent. Meanwhile, Palestine has yet to get its independence.

In 1948, the Palestinian territories were still under British rule, and had not yet been established as an internationally legally independent state. It was not until December 15, 1988, that Yasser Arafat declared the independence of Palestine which was divided into two political entities, namely the Israeli occupied territories and the Palestinian National Authority.

The Role of Palestine in Supporting Indonesian Independence

Apart from all that, Palestine also has a big role in supporting the independence of Indonesia. So many services were provided that it was recorded in the history of Indonesia as a country with the same great service as Egypt, India, and Australia.

Among them is the support of Sheikh Muhammad Amin Al-Husseini who succeeded in urging countries in the Middle East to participate with him in supporting and recognizing the independence and sovereignty of Indonesia.

In addition, great support was also obtained from a wealthy Palestinian merchant named Muhammad Ali Taher. He gave almost all of his money in Bank Arabiya for the Indonesian struggle fund at that time.
